Plate It Safe: Avoiding Mealtime Risks
Course Description:
Mealtimes present one of the highest daily health risks for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Unsafe practices, environmental distractions, and failure to follow prescribed diets or texture modifications can lead to choking, aspiration, and other serious medical emergencies. Provider staff, support coordinators, and case managers all play a critical role in ensuring mealtime safety for individuals with IDD.
Plate It Safe: Avoiding Mealtime Risks is a self-paced health and safety training eLearn course designed to increase awareness of common mealtime hazards and strengthen safe, respectful mealtime practices. The curriculum was developed by a multidisciplinary team to ensure practical, real-world application. The delivery of the training is flexible and tailored to meet the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This eLearn course prepares participants to implement safe mealtime practices and equips provider staff, support coordinators, and case managers with the knowledge needed to recognize risk factors, support direct support professionals (DSPs), and promote safer mealtime environments—without compromising dignity or choice.

Synopsis by Module
Learners are introduced to twelve common mealtime practices that significantly increase the risk of choking and aspiration. This module focuses on identifying unsafe behaviors, understanding why they are dangerous, and recognizing how small changes can greatly reduce risk.
This module explores silent aspiration—what it is, why it occurs, and why it is especially dangerous for people with IDD. Learners gain awareness of subtle warning signs and the importance of close observation during meals, as well as the need to promptly report any signs of silent aspiration or related risks to ensure safety and compliance.
Participants learn how to observe mealtime practices effectively and support people who require mealtime assistance, identifying areas where additional support, coaching, or corrective action may be needed. Emphasis is placed on respectful oversight and constructive communication.
This concluding module reinforces best practices for mealtime safety and emphasizes the responsibility to support people with IDD by advocating, educating, and providing personalized support. It highlights the shared responsibility of provider staff, DSPs, and support coordinators in reducing avoidable risk, and underscores the importance of implementing these best practices in daily routines.
